If you suspect you may have PCOS, you should make an appointment with your GP who will be able to discuss your symptoms with you. Your GP may refer you to another specialist (such as a Gynaecologist or Endocrinologist) or suggest some tests to help them determine if you have PCOS. These can include an ultrasound of the ovaries and blood tests.
If it is confirmed that you have PCOS, your GP might suggest other health professionals be involved in your treatment depending on your specific symptoms. This could include some of the following:
- an Accredited Practising Dietitian to assist with weight loss and changes to your diet
- a Psychologist if you have depression or anxiety
- an Exercise Physiologist if you need professional help with an ongoing exercise plan
- a Gynaecologist if you have menstrual or fertility problems
- an Endocrinologist if you have Diabetes
- a reproductive endocrinologist or Fertility specialist is you are are trying to conceive
These health professionals can all work together and your GP is the best person to coordinate your overall PCOS treatment.
